February is the month of love. Do you have Valentine’s Day plans? For many people, it’s a special day to celebrate with a dinner date or seeing a movie. Others choose to go out with friends to enjoy a local concert or go shopping. For parents with children however, celebrating Valentine’s Day could be a fun family event without going out!
Cooking on Valentine’s Day may not sound like a lot of fun, but you can make it exciting by including your kids! Come up with a recipe that the whole family will enjoy and ask your kids if they’d like to help. Kids will rarely pass up the opportunity to get messy in the kitchen. You can ask them to do simple cooking tasks such as cracking eggs, making meatballs, or making salad. Not only will you get help cooking, but your kids will feel proud when it’s time to serve dinner!
If you’d prefer to go out on Valentine’s Day for a traditional dinner date, you can celebrate it with your kids another way by baking cupcakes or cookies with them to share with their classmates! Kids love the idea of treats at school, especially sweet desserts. Cupcakes and cookies are just as easy to make as they are to share. Your kids will love choosing the flavors and decorations that go on them. Take some time the night before Valentine’s Day to bake the cupcakes and turn the usual ‘tv after dinner’ into a messy family event. Who doesn’t love hearing, “My parents helped me make them”?
Although cooking can be messy, you can prepare your children by teaching them kitchen rules. At the Manassas Park Community Center, our Cupcake Decorating Demo class will teach them how to decorate cupcakes for all occasions. If you’re worried about kitchen safety, our Snack Attack and Light Lunch and Dessert classes will teach them how to properly execute basic kitchen tasks and practice kitchen safety! Registration for all of these classes begins February 15. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early.
No matter how you celebrate Valentine’s Day, you can make it fun for the entire family!
