This past week, my youngest (7) was able to go to art camp at Cheers Art Studio.  Their camps are 1/2 day mornings (9am-12pm).  You pack your child a snack, but everything else is provided in terms of art supplies.  Ages 6-12 will enjoy these camps, with everyone able to have fun at their own artistic level.  Camp is $125/week and there are still 3 weeks available for your creative fun (well, your child's creative fun, and your 3 hours of "me time").
This is the class with their final projects :)

Savannah's week was "Drawing People and Animals" which included:
Monday- Trace ourselves full figure/ Full Skeleton (pencil and crayons)/ Shapes and Shading
Tuesday- Skull/ Shading techniques to create texture (pencil and charcoal)
Wednesday- Portraits- finishing half the page (charcoal)/ How to Draw Animals from shapes (pencil)
Thursday- Self-portraits/ How to Draw Animals (charcoal)
Friday- Animals- paint your pet or endangered animal (paint)

And finally, since you guys enjoyed our video Newsies Review, here's what Savannah thought of art camp at Cheers:
I don't know why I keep shooting these sitting in my bed.  I have so many pretty places in my house...next time I will try to be a little more creative :)

Disclosure: Thanks to Cheers for having Savannah out for a week of camp!! We were gifted a week of camp in order to do our review, but all opinions are honest and our own.  Have you ever tried to script a 7 year old? Can't be done, even if I wanted to.

Options are available for preschoolers (age 3) to high schoolers (age 15).  There is also an option to add swim lessons to your child's day for $45 a week.

Camp counselors are all over 18, background checked, and trained in CPR/first aid.  For a full camp listing, as well as details on specific camps and registration, visit the Freedom Center's Summer Camp Guide HERE.

Review: Vertical Rock

Published: 06/13/2014
I don't really know how to start this other than to say that Vertical Rock was absolutely awesome.  Just so much fun.  Any age, any level, any ability, your family can have fun doing this.  If your child is old enough to try to scale your bookshelves or the kitchen pantry, they can rock climb.

I know that trying a completely new activity at a completely new place can be intimidating, so here's how it works.

1) Enter the address (10225 Nokesville Rd, Manassas, VA 20110) into your GPS/Garmin/iPhone.
2) Follow directions
3) Arrive.

That's really it.  Everything else that you need is taken care of.  Get a day pass and climb all you want for $18 (adults), $16 (students), or $12 (military).  You'll need your own equipment, or you can rent what you'll need ($11 for everything).  Alternatively, if you're new, you can try it out for $20, which includes your harness, 3 climbs ($5 for each additional) and a Vertical Rock belayer to help you figure it all out.  For $35 you can take their "Learn the Ropes" course, during which you'll learn how to top-rope, how to "tie in", and how to belay safely for your partner. Classes are drop-in and offered Monday-Friday from 6-8pm and Sundays from 3-5.

Really love it? You don't need a Bally's membership- you can join Vertical Rock as your gym! In addition to climbing, they have a fitness room, and offer "Rock Ready" (which looks a lot like the class that rhymes with "Boss Bit"), Krav Maga, Yoga, and a host of other fun stuff to keep you in shape without relying solely on a treadmill, which, let's be honest, is boring.

We did an open climb, and the one thing I'll say is that you should spring for the $5 to rent shoes.  They're sexy like bowling shoes:

But they are SO MUCH EASIER to climb in.  Seriously.  I was informed that if "they're not tight, they're not right" so don't hop up a size because your toes are giving each other a bear hug.

Next, our friendly belayers helped us get into our harnesses.  One thing I didn't know about rock climbing is how fashionable it is ;)
 Yesssss! Work it! Work it!
So now you head to the walls.  Courses are rated with cards (and they have funny names like "I should be with my mommy right now" or "Fried Squirrel Brains").  They start at 5.5, or as I like to call it "That sounds about right" and move up to 5.10, which then get letters after them.  Obviously the higher you go the more difficulty is involved.  The idea is to follow the tape color for the course you're doing.  Some specify that you can use "any feet" which means that you can use an of the grips you can get your hoofs on, and others want you to just use the color you're following.  Rock climbing involves a good deal of thinking when you add those caveats- you have to check where you are and think about where you're going- I was surprised the first time I climbed myself into a corner and had to back up and think about how to approach where I was going!
This is the wall that Logan, Savannah, and I started on.  It has about a bijillion grips on it, and you can "climb the rainbow" and pick anything you want.  Here's where the staff really came in.  Logan got to this point (above) and was like "Yup, I'm scared and I'm done" and Zack, our belayer, was like "Yeah, totally hear that buddy- just touch that green one first" and by the time he did that, he realized he was just a few "rocks" from the brown section.....
And well, then it was just a few hand grips to the green spongy thing....and at that point, you may as well touch the top.  He was too nervous to rappel down the side, which I get, because it's a big exercise in trust to have someone you just met tell you to let go of the wall and trust them to not drop you.  Especially when you're 8.  He climbed down slowly, but surely. However, he did rappel on his last climb of the day, which was great!
We had a few tears on the harder wall- somebody made the mistake of looking down.  (I climbed to the top of this one- but I didn't look anywhere but the place I was currently at- I probably would've cried, too!) but, again, the belayers did a great job of providing direction and assured us that they've had to climb up before to help someone down, but they didn't have to.

The minute his feet touched the floor, he asked to go up again. I guess Belayer Anna did a good job :)

In addition to open climbs and classes and memberships, Vertical Rock also offers a kids night, birthday parties, climbing teams (Team meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 530-730! VR hosts competitions and travels to other gyms to participate in competitions), indoor and outdoor camps, scout merit badges, LOCK INS(!!!), corporate events and outdoor climbing tours.  There's also a bouldering wall if you really want to climb but not quite so high:
Best part about their kids night is that you don't have to reserve (although you can) so you can just be like "It's Friday night and my kids are making me crazy!! Vertical Rock!" and drop them off from 7-9pm for $25 for Non Members and $15 For Members, Safety equipment included.   I am informed that the kids "come home tired", which is just what I like to hear :)

If you'd like to give your child a chance to try Rock Climbing, but aren't ready to strap in yourself, check out the Vertical Rock Summer camps!

**Thinking about a membership? Here's a note from owner Lindsey**

Memberships receive the Learn the ropes class for Free, Yoga, Rock Ready, Discounts on Youth Teams and Summer Camps and much more. A Family of 4 can have access to a fitness activity that they will love doing together M-S for just $31.25 a person a month. A 2 person family membership is only $47.50 a month. Why go to the movies!?
We are family owned and operated facility who really get to know our members. We introduce members to each other through cookouts and parties to keep the community strong. Parents meet each other and climb with each other while their kids play and climb together. The family environment is amazing and we are so excited to share it with more people!

Disclosure: Vertical Rock is a sponsor of PwcMoms and allowed us to come climb.  However, all opinions and experiences are true and my own.  If I had looked down, I think I would've cried- and I really do think the ugly shoes make it way easier.  #TrueStory.

KODU Game Design at Animated Child

Published: 05/01/2014
Animated Child in Montclair has a little something for everyone.  My Kindergartner loves their indoor play space designed with areas to involve each of Gardner's seven intelligences.  The preschoolers I see there always look happy and engaged during class, which is based on Last Child in the Woods.  There are language classes, music classes, art classes, and then, there are the camps.

My boys LOVE them some camp at Animated Child.  They've now tried both the Minecraft and the KODU Game design camps and they liked both.  I like that even though there's time on the computer, it's educational, and that the staff makes sure the kids have other activities, as well, so they're not just tuned into a screen for 3 hours and nothing else happens.

My 8 and 10 year old actually tried the game design camp over Spring Break just so we could write a review for you guys.  What can I say, they're just selfless like that ;) Both boys were incredibly excited when I picked them up the first day, although they were devistated to learn that I hadn't signed them up for the afternoon session (camp was 1/2 day) which was Minecraft. Bad mom.  They spent the first day setting up their worlds, and they had a tremendous time.  By Wednesday, my 8 year old complained that he would like more time off the computer, and the staff instantly responded by ensuring there were logic-based games for him to engage with for more time than already planned.  In our house I really limit screen time, less than an hour a day, so this was different for him, but the staff was very responsive. At the end of the week, both kids were very excited to show their dad their games.

For those of you that have not met my children in real life, this is actually how they speak.  And boy do they speak.  They talk and talk and talk and talk. I thought about youtubing their responses for you, but decided that they'd start goofing off and singing weird songs, and we wouldn't be very productive.

From Riley (Age 10)- "I think other kids would like it, but they would have to like playing video games and creating things.  My favorite part was when we got to actually start understanding how KODU works.  My least favorite part was that you have to be a little patient because you have to be able to create something first before you can play it.  Sometimes I'm patient. I had fun.  My overall experience was great.  You didn't let us stay for Minecraft, though, and that was not cool.  Seriously, mom."

From Logan (Age 8)- "So this camp was fun.  I was a little scared at first because I thought the programming would be like JAVA like dad does, but then it was really easy and fun.  I didn't know KODU would be like that.  I though it would be super complex and you would need to type in a bunch of codes instead of clicking on things and then putting them together. My favorite part was when I found out before anyone else on my own how to make enemies in a game only shoot at you and not each other because I'm awesome. My least favorite part was the day I was sick and couldn't go. I think other kids would like this camp if they really like learning because it filled my head with a bunch of interesting things. That's about it."

I'm going to be honest with you guys that camp at Animated Child is not cheap.  You definitely get what you pay for in terms of experienced staff, educational value, and engaging experience, but it's not something that our family could afford every week of the summer.  Luckily, though, you can choose your week(s) and that allows you to do the Kotlus Family Rotation, which is a week of chillin like a villain, a week of camp you pay for, a week of VBS (cause it's free!!) and a week of vacation somewhere.  Doing that each month allows me to keep the budget sane, and still pick really cool camps. STEM/STEAM activities are so vital for our kids, and camps that include STEM components tend to cost more because of the equipment needed, but I definitely think that this camp was worthwhile!

Guys, we've been friends for awhile, right? And, if any of you were serial killers or something, you'd have figured out my kids' names already, because it really wouldn't be hard.  It's mentally taxing for me to keep referring to them by ages or birth order, so let's just get real about it.

This is Savannah.  She's 5 and she enjoys pink, sparkles, soccer, math, kicking butt and taking names, swimming, and ice skating.  She does not enjoy dresses, tights, mosquitos, or when people do not realize that she is Lord and Master of the Universe.  Especially her brothers- they should know better.

Savannah checked out the Ice Stars Fun Camp last week, and I thought I'd share her feedback with you.  We thought about doing a video, but then I realized that not everyone speaks rapid-fire five year old, so typing her responses would be easier.

So, kiddo, tell me about camp.
Camp?  Camp was good.  I was just awesome and I skated and one day we got to do the slip and slide. Daddy let me buy lunch from the cafe and I got chicken fingers AND tater tots, which is a lot of food, but he let me do it.

What was your favorite part about camp?
Um, we did lots of different stuff. It was all good. I made a t-shirt, do you want to see it? (this is another good reason not to make a video- she just runs off.  For the record, I've seen the tie-dye shirt at least 20 times)

Was there anything you didn't like?
I thought we were going to skate too much, but we didn't, we just did it more times.  And now, I can skate while I jump.

You mean jump while you skate?
No, I mean skate while I jump.  And, I can do a spin on two feet.  And, Mrs. Marina (her coach) says I'm doing a good job.  Also, I liked the teachers.  When I grow up I'm going to be a camp teacher at the ice rink.  How old do you think I have to be to be a camp teacher at the ice rink?

I'd imagine you have to be a teenager.  Would you go back to camp again? Should I tell people their kids would like skating camp?
Oh, sure, I'd go to all the weeks.  They can come, too. We'll have fun.

That's Savannah on the far right- this picture is from the PwIce.com site.
So, there you have it.  Savannah liked camp, and thinks we can all have fun together.  I was a little nervous the first day because it looked like many of the kids were older than her, but she informs me that this made it more fun because she got to hang out with the big kids.  Also, they mix the hockey camp kids and the figure skating kids together during some parts of the day, so there are plenty of people to play with. You can pack your child's lunch, or they can purchase lunch from the rink cafe.  Camp runs from 9am-5pm, but there is a before/after care option if you need a longer day.  For us, since we're not typically a daycare family, Savannah SLEPT after camp each day.  She also had a wicked crush on one of the hockey coaches.  In any event, she had a great time.  The mixed age group was probably my biggest concern, but she seemed to have a great time and came home talking about friends every day, so it worked out fine! Each week there are different off-ice activities, if you need to know about anything (like bringing a swimsuit for the slip-n-slide or a shirt to tie-dye) they'll let you know.  Also, the kids are on the ice several hours a day, but they break it into chunks so they're not bored or over-stressed about skating.  There is some outdoor play time, so we tried to dress in light layers so Savannah would be comfortable on the ice and outside.  It's a challenge, but you can do it :) Also, there's a form to sign if you want to leave sunscreen.

If you'd like more information on hockey or figure skating or learn to skate camps, you can find it here.

Disclosure: Prince William Ice Center is one of our sponsors, but they didn't ask me to write this, nor was I compensated.  We paid for camp just like everyone else, and all opinions are my own. Yours might vary, but I'd be happy to hear them in the comments if you want to share.  We had a great week at camp, but are not responsible for your experiences as we don't control the ice rink.

Giveaway: Camps at The Little Gym Gainesville

Published: 06/13/2013

We're so excited to bring you ANOTHER camp giveaway- this time for the little ones!! The Little Gym of Gainesville, located at 7364 Atlas Walk Way in Gainesville (That's the Virginia Gateway Shopping Plaza- 7364 Atlas Walk Way, Gainesville VA) is giving away a day of their fun camps to THREE lucky winners!! The Little Gym is a ton of fun- we've been for birthday parties, and, Virginia Gateway has not one, but two salons, so you can go get a mani/pedi while your child enjoys camp.

Or, take a nap in your mini van.  I understand :) You could also go home and catch up on housework...but why would anyone waste 3 precious hours doing that?

From The Little Gym:
The Little Gym camps combine physical activity and gym games with arts, crafts and special events and guests -- from a furry friend to our local heroes such as fire fighters and policemen!  Each week offers a different interactive learning theme and each day brings a unique lesson plan!  Our flexible scheduling allows you to book just one day, a week or multiple weeks at a time -- whatever will fit your families summer schedule!

Check out some of these fantastic themes
The Little Gym Crazy Carnival!!
Cars, Planes, Trucks and Trains
X-treme Sports of All Sorts
Superheroes!
Legends, Fables and Folklore
Lights, Camera, Action!
Cheerleading!
My Animal Planet
The Little Gym Olympics
Hip Hop Karate Chop!
Sky Rangers!

Camps begin this week (July 10th) and run through August 23rd, and there are both afternoon and morning half day options.  I personally love that The Little Gym has made the effort to offer both "girl", "boy" and gender-neutral themes.  Having both boys and girls in my family, I'm always on the lookout for a camp that will interest all of my kids so that I can spend my free time as actual free time, not running from one camp to another dropping off children with varying interests!

Summer Camps and Vacation Bible School in Prince William County

Looking for VBS or camp in Prince William County? Here's what I've got.  They're done by DATE, so that you can decide what weeks you need coverage.  I was going to try to color code them by half day/full day/VBS, but that got complicated and hurt my head, so I gave up, although I did turn the VBS listings blue in case that's all you're here for..  If you would like to submit your camp dates (just like these, please, I'm not taking them incomplete or not done in this format) I'll be happy to add them.

Prince William County Parks and Recreation doesn't think I'm cool enough to submit their events, ever, and since I'm tied up with this whole radiation bit this year, I didn't take the time to separate out their camp listings by week.  You can find their guide online, however, here at Prince William County Parks Summer Camps 2013.

City of Manassas Park Parks and Recreation Summer Camps 2013 are online here.  They don't think I'm cool, either.  It's okay, I'm not bitter about it ;)

Leesylvania State Park's Junior Ranger Program 2013

Permalink to Leesylvania%20State%20Park%27s%20Junior%20Ranger%20Program%202013
Published: 05/01/2013
Leesylvania State Park offers a "Junior Ranger" program each summer.  There are several dates, as well as campouts.  For additional information, call the visitor center at 703-583-6904.
About the Program
The Junior Ranger program at Leesylvania State Park is all about hands-on practical learning opportunities in a well supervised set- ting. It is a great way for you and your child to learn about the rich history and nature that is in your own backyard.
Each day we cover a new topic, and introduce fun educational activi- ties that help keep things fun and interesting. We offer different activities each year so don’t worry about this being your second or third time as a participant.
The program is designed with the outdoors in mind so the majority of the time is spent in our 556 acre park. We have two leaders for each session who work together to create a safe and secure learn- ing environment.
Fee’s - There is a $60.00 enrollment fee per session for each partici- pant. This covers all supplies, graduation certificate, t-shirt, and patch.
Items to bring - Keep in mind that we will be outdoors so please bring the following:
Water (not soda)
Sunscreen
Tennis Shoes/boots (no sandals) Extra socks
Bug spray
Hand Sanitizer
A snack for snack time

Family Night - Parents are always encouraged to take part in our daily activities. There is also a family camp out night several times during the summer for graduates of the program. These are held at the Bushey Point campground, and start at 7:30pm. There are vari- ous activities including night hikes and cooking. Families can leave any time they choose, or camp out overnight and leave the next morning. See the back for dates.

A day at Junior Rangers
Parents can drop off their children up to 15 minutes before the scheduled start of their session. ALL PARTICIPANTS are to be signed in at the beginning of the day, and at the end of the day will need to be signed out by a guardian.
Once the first participants arrive the Junior Ranger leaders will introduce them to one another, and will wait for everyone to arrive at Shelter #2. Then once everyone has arrived and is signed in by their parents the day starts.
Depending on the age group activities will vary. They include, but are not limited to: Nature hikes, river seining, pond play, historical games, and canoeing for the 10-12 year old participants.
If a Junior Ranger has been an active participant each day they will be able to take part in a graduation ceremony. This takes place the last 30 minutes on the final day of each session. Children will talk about what they learned and receive a certificate, t-shirt, and patch.
Questions
Can I sign up over the phone? -No-There are lots of thing to cover with parents before they sign their child up and we need to make sure they understand everything. Payment is due when you sign up at the visitor center (no holding spots). What if it rains? -We take kids inside, or under a covered shelter during a rain, or bad weather event.
Can I sign up for more than one session? - We are happy to have participants sign up again, but we will have to put you on a waiting list to see if others, who have not been through the program, would like to give it a try.
Strict about age groups? - We like to keep our age groups together but we might be able to work with parents. No children under 4 allowed. Sessions are 15 participants max

Hallabolou is a full service Children’s Enrichment and Event Company.  I first met their owner, Vanessa, at the Chick-Fil-A Fire and Rescue Fest.  I instantly decided that I needed to know the woman with the purple apron and approximately 75 pounds of Legos.  Bright, enthusiastic, and passionate about engaging and enriching children's lives, Vanessa instantly won me over on Hallabolou (a secret message saying hello to her children) and her work there.  Read more about them below, and be sure to check them out on Facebook and their Website, too! They offer classes, after school enrichment, camps, and more!

From the owner:
Our enrichment programs and camps are dedicated to creating an atmosphere that fosters each child’s feeling of autonomy and positive self-image.  From a young age, children are fascinated with the world around them.  Hallabolou uses this fascination to teach life skills and assist children in understanding and expressing their emotions through a creative technique known as the Five Points of Discovery. These points are Imagination, Determination, Commitment, Self-Confidence and Cooperation. Through our offerings of bRiK Programs or Learning Levels we teach STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We enrich their experiences by also providing a Dance and Movement program, Educational Cooking for Kids, Theater and Art.

The Junior Ranger Program at Leesylvania State Park runs several weeks this summer for various ages.  Parents may use the program as a drop-off camp or may remain with their child, if they're more comfortable.  Children as young as 4 and as old as 12 may participate in various weeks.  Please see the flier for additional information.  This fantastic park is located here on the Woodbridge/Dumfries side of Prince William County and offers several programs for families and children throughout the year.

Prince William Forest Park is a fantastic location for camping, hiking, and even meeting friends at the playground!  There are several entrances to the Park, including a few from route 234 in Dumfries and off route 619 past Independent Hill going to Triangle. The main entrance to the park, which I recommend you use, is the one you reach by taking exit 150B off I-95.  When you enter the park, there is a ranger station, but it may or may not be manned.  If there's no ranger, head straight down the road and you'll arrive at an information area where you can pay your $5.  Admission is good for seven consecutive days, so it's a pretty awesome deal, when you think about it that way!

Visitors Center and Welcome Station
Looping back towards the entrance, on the right hand side there is parking and a large playground with an open field.  The play area is partially shaded, but the field gets some fairly direct sunlight.  With all the trees around, you'll definitely want to do a tick check when you get home.
Playground area with slides, climbing wall, playhouse and more

Across the street from the playground, there is a hike entrance.  I want to say the blazes are green, but I am not positive, so please don't quote me on that.  The hike is paved with shredded plastic (similar or the same to a rubber track type of feel).  It would be very stroller friendly, if you're looking to hike with a baby!
The hike winds you past a creek, and there are lots of signs explaining the flora and fauna, which is helpful since my kids always want to know what each individual leaf is and Google is so sick of me asking about "4 tipped leaves on flat bark trees in Virginia" that they're considering cutting me off.  I don't have to search in an encyclopedia, but I can't stay here...you know how it goes ;)
Here's another view of the playground.  The kids had a great time running around, and as a bonus, there's a BATHROOM!! Flushing toilets, running water, the whole deal.  I consider proximity of the potty to be a huge deal, so chalk that up as a win!

Prince William Forest Park has a scenic drive, as well, and it's quite pleasant.  I would have especially loved it when my first was a baby.  He had horrendous colic and the only way he slept was in motion.  A nice drive through the park would have been a great way to spend the time driving the baby!

Finally, there's camping.  We were fortunate to spend part of a night with our boy scout troop, and had a great time! There are, again, restrooms, as well as nice sites with decent parking.  We were near an outdoor area with lots of bench seating where we enjoyed a bonfire, too.  We stayed in the tent camping, but they also offer 5 cabins.  For details on camping at Prince William Forest Park, just click here.

Breakdown-

Prince William Forest Park
Pros- nice playground, bathrooms located nearby, camping and parking
Cons- small fee, multiple entrances can be confusing to first timers (like me my first time!)
Cautions- only that you should be sure to check for ticks, but that's any outdoor location in Virginia!
